2 wireless on dsl router - XP connects just fine
vista connects to router but router doesn't give IP = 169.xxx.xxx.xxx
device manager shows 2 network adapters wired & wireless
Manage adapters under Network & Sharing shows no adapters.

I spent an hour on phone with AT&T and it is not in the router
no security on router
no MAC filtering
everything was reset, released, renewed, rebooted, ....
brand new wireless adapter/vista drivers installed - it should not even connect to router if drivers were bad.
I suspect if I connected a cable to the router it would not work either since that adapter does not appear under Manage Adapters either.

System has never been connected to the router wired or wireless.

where to go from here??

Sounds like you did not finish installing all motherboard drivers.  Go back to the MB manufacturer site, download (with your internet enabled machine) all the drivers and any BIOS updates that are available.

Other thoughts...  is this a laptop?  Wireless is turned on?

Is this a Branded machine?  Have you tried backing up and using the restore DVDs?

XP and Vista are very different, are you trying to install with the esame drivers?
