i really don't understand why a few guys continue to insist that you can't install windows 8.1 with a windows 8 key

wazer and your truly got a certain number of computers and we installed windows 8.1

during the installation we were asked for a key

both of us used a $14,99 windows 8 key

it was a  MS offer and i bought 'em in october 2012

all my computers and all wazer computers are ACTIVATED

END OF THE STORY

Perhaps because you and wazer installed a recent win 8.1 image, like for instance ,8.1 spring update.....

The other guys are right about early 8.1 versions.....when I installed 8.1 RTM,my key didn't work,I 1st had to use 1 of the generic 8.1 keys during installation.........AFTERWARDS,my fresh install accepted my win 8 key,NOT during installation! :)

i made a few installations these days

i used different isos

of course i didn't use RTM

it makes no sense right now

anyway the question was

and by the way it was my question

could you use a windows 8 key with a windows 8.1 iso?

and the reply is YES

we are speaking of the present

the present is now

you can't invalidate the present

using the past

and it was absolutely ridiculous

that after denying that it was possible

our scully replied to my question

with my reply

the one he fought against

I'm with you on the YES fact,I only wanted to point out that this wasn't always the case, and perhaps that was the reason why there was disagreement.....

Really? That might explain why my 8 key's don't work with burned DVD I made when 8.1 came out... I'm gonna try this with a flash drive. Download the latest 8.1 build from the Windows Media Creation Tool, disable my HDD's in my BIOS and test entering in my Win 8 key.

Don't plan on reinstalling lol. Just trying this :P I'll report back and see if it works.

Well what I did recently with a unused Windows 8 key was install  Windows 8.1 using a 8.1 ISO. I used the Windows 8 key to activate with no problems. I wanted to see if this would work and it did without a hitch.

Please do remember - MS is still using the old BASE of Windows 8 - so what is possible today might not work tomorrow.

and  RTM is out, Not the MSDN release, not theINSIDER release, but the OEM _ RETAIL - General Audience (GA) is released.

NO ONE WILL KNOW UNTIL THEN....

So please no arguing or proved you wrong,

Being an avid gamer, I heard the stories concerning windows 8 and avoided it like the plague, i cant imagine 8.1 being much better.

With windows 10 gaming is just as fast if not faster than it was on Windows 7, so they can go ahead a kill the W8 strain all together :P

PS: roflmao you guys are crazy :)

You shouldn't believe everything you hear my friend. Every PC game I own (with the exception of the 16-bit programs, and ONE game that came out in 2001) every game I installed on Windows 8.1 worked flawlessly. And my steam account is over 500 Games. Let alone all the DVD only games that I own.

Windows 10 on the other hand? So far it's the most incompatible Operating System I've since Windows Vista. Only 1/3 of my games work at all. Keep in mind though, that as a general rule of thumb - Windows 10 is running pretty good. I think MS jumped the gun a bit on releasing it so early as it's still a little buggy.

Hopefully, they'll sort out all of this incompatibility bullshit. I'm tired of simple programs not working in Windows 10.

I too have many games, at 45  I can tell you I have too many to install on my 1.5tb harddrive.

All the ones I do have installed on windows 10 Pro x64 10240 run like a dream.

I am also regestered beta tester and the two current betas i am involved in run perfect in windows 10 as well.

What games are you proporting as not working on windows 10 and in what client ?

Many GFWL games won't install at all. Halo 2, and Gears Of War are the only ones I've tried so far. But those are MS exclusives! You would think they would have made an effort to get their OWN games running on Windows 10.

I haven't tried all my games yet tbh. Steam seems to run games just fine. However, I also experience bad issues with nearly ever GameHouse game. Compatibility mode doesn't do anything. Upon that - Several programs don't work as well. Resource Hacker crashes when you try to open any file, HexDen doesn't install at all. (thank god for the portable version), and MSI Live Update, Smart Utilities, and Command Center - while working, have a bad tendency to crash randomly.

*Try replacing resource hacker with Process Lasso. --> https://bitsum.com/processlasso/

The games I own and mainly test are from publishers Ubi Soft, EA and Steam publishers, I have taken part in two (A.A.) Americas Army version beta's

THose launch clients include as you may know Uplay, Origin, and Steam these I have had no or limited issues that a few tweaks couldnt fix.

Owning the Witcher's newest release has allowed me to play around with the new GOG game manager, it has a way to go but is shaping up nicely.

Recently Dying Light was a challenge but it too runs smoothly now.

That i have never tried. but was told NO. Thanks for the info..

Might try., so inserting the Windows 8 key will allow Installation and Activation.  ?

I was able to install Windows 8.1 with the Windows 8 key multiple times. I loaded using Windows 8.1 ISO from this site and everything went fine when I was loading my SSD for the first time.
